Yeah, my Sofa
Yeah-ha-hey
Zappa is one of a kind!
Here he has managed to couple some bizarre, seemingly unrelated lyrics, with some really grand music.
I don’t like everything he did, but some (like this) are real genius.
And oh he can be bizarre!
Zappa was the Nikola Tesla of jazz.
Well, it says right there in the bible that on the 7th day, God rested. Now he’s gonna get some good rest in without a decent sofa to kick back on? So obviously, somewhere in there, he created a sofa. So he’s talking about that (God is). And of course, God being omniscient, he’s also present in all things…including the dirt beneath the sofa’s rollers, all the stray change lost between the sofa’s cushions, and the cracks and crannies themselves. And then, you know, God gets a little hungry and starts thinking about a nice little chrome dinette he created one time…with some really fantastic eggs…and a hot little waitress…named Opal…
Please check out the page (at top) “A CHALLENGE”.
Great commentary. I love it.
Most people wouldn’t consider the divinity of their chrome dinette….
I realize Zappa wrote “…Eggs of all persuasions…” on the record sleeve, but the phrase “Eier aller Arten” also refers to the various styles of preparing eggs for eating. Zappa seemed to enjoy exploiting double meanings throughout his career, so this could be an example of Zappa presenting a word’s alternate meaning – rather than the contextual meaning.
